League History
The initial idea for a league in Loughborough was that of Sandra McCallum, and she soon recruited likeminded individuals such as Lynda Wells (fixture secretary for many years) and Lesley Reeday (who is still very active in both Loughborough and Regional netball) and formed the Loughborough Town Netball League in 1978. They then set about canvassing local companies to enter teams in to the league, eventually resulting in 7 teams being involved in the first ever season:
Riker
Fisons Bumbles
Fisons Bombers
Halifax Kangaroos
Brush
Ladybird
Morrises
Out of these teams, the only team still represented, although with a different club identity, is Fisons, now called Scorpions. During the early years matches were played at Burleigh college. There were no local rules - if a team was short, anybody could play irrespective of which team they belonged to. The first 'official' league chairman, Tina Small, is still playing in the league today.
Around 1981, all league games were moved from Burleigh to a newly built 'state of the art' leisure centre in Loughborough. There are many examples of players, who joined around this time, still playing in the league today. For several years a junior league ran alongside the adult league, and this advanced the standard of play in Loughborough and again there are many people, who started playing netball in the junior league, still playing today.
We have come along way since then, for the past 7 years the league averages 27 teams split into 3 divisions, running alongside the annual cup and plate competition. The level of netball rises consistently each season, and we are very proud of the 'community' that has been created around the LTNL, which flourishes year on year.
The governing committee meet regularly during the season to ensure the continued smooth running of the league. Please use this site to check fixtures, see the latest league tables, read the monthly committee meeting minutes etc. The registration page will detail players registered to each team and lives used within a club.
We will try to ensure it is as up to date as possible and give you instant access to all relevant information as easily as possible. If you have any feedback or would like to contribute to this site please e-mail Jane@hammersley.me.uk
